Batman: Two-Face is Willing to Kill for Rene Montoya

Despite having a strained relationship, there is a deep connection between Police Commissioner Renee Montoya and the Batman villain Two-Face that they both can agree is not healthy. In GCPD: Blue Wall #5 (by John Ridley, Stefano Raffaele, Brad Anderson, and Josh Reed), Two-Face approached Montoya with an offer that he believed would free both of them from this dynamic. After her brother was brutally murdered by a police officer gone rogue, Two-Face offered to kill him for Montoya.

From his point of view, it would not only protect Montoya from taking matters into her own hands, but it would also clear the debt he owes her after trying to ruin her life years ago. As startling an offer as this is, it does prove that Two-Face truly wants to earn her forgiveness. He's so dedicated to this that he is apparently willing to undo all the progress he's made within the last few years to redeem himself.

When they first met, Montoya actually had faith in Two-Face. She had managed to connect with his Harvey Dent persona and tried to encourage him to be better, creating an odd friendship between the two. Unfortunately, Harvey developed romantic feelings for Montoya, which she did not reciprocate. When it became clear that Montoya would never love him voluntarily, Two-Face decided to force the issue by ruining her professional and personal life. He proceeded to frame her for murder, out her as a lesbian to the entire police department, and then stage a prison escape.

Two-Face unleashed this chaos so that Montoya would have no choice but to accept him, as no one else would want her. To say that he nearly destroyed her would be an understatement. In the years since Two-Face has come to regret what he did to her. She was one of the few people in the world who tried to see the good in him, and for that, he destroyed her life. So, within this series, he has been making attempts to atone for his actions. The dark place Montoya finds herself in gives Two-Face an opportunity to save her from herself, even if it results in his own destruction.

Two-Face's offer to kill the former cop who murdered Renee's brother was genuine. He would even let her choose the method of his death, be it quick or slow, all with the promise that no one would ever find out she had agreed to it and without any strings attached. This was to be his apology, an attempt to make amends with Montoya. He acknowledges that they can never be friends, there is too much bad blood, but he can at least try to ease the burden.

Despite his initial obsession with Montoya, it seems that Two-Face genuinely cares for her. He could see how she struggled in recent months, but now he recognizes the abyss she is staring into. Harvey may never be able to undo the past, but he can prevent Montoya from finishing the work he started. He would be willing to forsake his own future and give in to his worst impulses, just to spare her the long, traumatizing journey he went through.
